Our Story

Lola’s House is a care home in Brough, East Yorkshire, built around a simple idea: that people living in care homes deserve to be known as individuals, not managed as routines.

We provide residential and specialist dementia care in a setting shaped by consistency, familiarity and genuine attention to each resident’s life.

From Lavender House to
Lola’s House

Our care home in Brough was formerly known as Lavender House. When the current owners took over in 2023, they began a new chapter – new leadership, a rebuilt management team, and a renewed focus on safe, kind, person-centred care.

The home itself isn’t newly built, but it has changed significantly under its current leadership. Lola’s House has expanded to 47 bedrooms, including a purpose-built dementia-friendly extension designed around the needs of people living with memory loss.

Today, the home is shaped by the people in it: a team who take the time to know each resident, and leadership who are genuinely involved in daily life here.

Who is Lola?

People often ask about the name.

In Filipino, “Lola” means grandmother. It’s a simple word, but it carries a lot: warmth, respect, familiarity, and a sense of family that isn’t just for show.

That’s also how we care. Residents here aren’t tasks to complete. They’re people with life stories, relationships, memories and preferences – and that’s what shapes the way our team looks after them, every day.

How We Care

We take the time to listen, and to respond with kindness when someone needs a little extra support. We protect each resident’s privacy, independence and sense of self – care is something done with someone, not to them. We respect people’s choices, routines, beliefs and the way they prefer to communicate.

Familiar faces and steady routines help residents feel calmer and more settled, so consistency matters to us as much as compassion does. We get to know each person’s likes, dislikes and history, and residents can personalise their rooms with belongings that make the space feel like theirs.

None of that works without trust – so we try to earn it honestly, by doing what we say we’ll do, and by keeping the conversation open with relatives and care professionals throughout every resident’s stay.

Our Team

Good care depends on consistency, which is why Lola’s House doesn’t use agency staff. Our carers are directly employed, so residents are looked after by familiar faces who know their needs, routines and personalities. So families can feel reassured that the person caring for their loved one actually knows them.

The home is led by Registered Manager Sarah Andrew, with hands-on involvement from owners Adam and Marlona Carter. They work closely with the care team, residents, relatives and visiting professionals, which means decisions here are made with a real understanding of daily life at Lola’s House – not from a distance.

A Warm, Welcoming Community

Life at Lola’s House is about more than care tasks. It’s about helping residents feel seen, included and comfortable.

Staff spend time with residents throughout the day – chatting, offering reassurance, sharing a quiet moment, or joining them at mealtimes. Meals are often eaten together, which helps mealtimes feel relaxed and sociable rather than clinical.

Food is freshly cooked on site, and residents can enjoy regular entertainment, including professional performers, along with visiting services such as a hairdresser and chiropodist.

Everyday details are what build a sense of community: residents supported by people who know them, families who feel welcomed, and a home with an atmosphere built on care, familiarity and respect.
